Up until recently the craze for large hole beads on cable style bracelets (think Pandora, Biagi, and Troll) has left me wondering what the big deal is. Why were people so crazy about these things? Then I started shopping around for some and discovered that some enterprising person has actually made a hippo bead for these bracelets! Yahoo!!!

Of course, I immediately bought some and stuck them in the store. And there they sat. It occurred to me that maybe other people are clueless about this new trend. So then I bought some bracelets to go with the hippo beads and voila! Like magic, orders started pouring in. Well, I said to myself, I’m not the only person who is totally out of touch with what’s cool right now. I so need a teenage daughter to guide me.

Silver & Howlite Hippo Necklace

Here’s a necklace I finished last week that I’m quite pleased with. I’ve had these gray and white howlite beads in my drawer for over a year now and I had no idea what to do with them. I bought them online by mistake, thinking I was clicking on something else. I’m not a big fan of these beads as they aren’t exactly my favorite colors. I took them out the other day thinking I might sell them on eBay or Etsy just to get rid of them but then I thought, no, why don’t I consider this a challenge and try to make something from them. I gathered up all my silver and black beads that might complement the howlite and started messing around with a design. At first the necklace didn’t even have a hippo in it. Then I remembered that I had bought these roaring hippos a while back so I dug them out too. Finally a design emerged from the chaos:

I’m quite pleased with the result and only reluctantly decided to put this up for sale – I kind of wanted to keep it!
