Organic foods and products are becoming ever more popular and are entering the mainstream consciousness. Leading the charge are mothers of young children, motivated by concern about quantities of chemicals entering those small bodies. Hippo Mojo shares these concerns. We are searching for baby safe toys and products and are delighted to announce the arrival of two organic hippo stuffed animals for babies and small children alike. Even adults will delight in the soft fabric of these snuggly hippos.

These hippos are produced by Miyim.com of all natural organic cotton that is allowed to retain its natural form – untreated, unbleached, and unprocessed. It is dyed using only all-natural ingredients derived from nature’s plants and minerals.

A herd of hippos stampeded into our warehouse today, flattening grass and wallowing in water. All the way from Kenya, these mini soapstone hippos are hand carved by artisans who are part of SMOLArt, a group of artists who live in the rural village of Tabaka, Kenya. SMOLArt is a member of IFAT, the International Fair Trade Association, which assures that the artisans are paid a fair price for their work and supports community development by contributing to projects that improve living conditions, education, and health of their members and the village at large.

What is Soapstone Anyway?
Soapstone is a natural stone that is mined from pits. Artisans carve the hippos then smooth rough edges with sandpaper dipped in water. Paint in African motifs is applied in brilliant colors. Soapstone feels cool and smooth to the touch and not at all soapy!
Our herd of hippos will be making their way into crates for shipment to your home, so be sure to order yours soon.

Of all the search terms people type into their search engine when looking for hippos, it seems that “stuffed hippo” tops the list, followed closely by “plush hippo.” With this in mind, Hippo Mojo is expanding our line of stuffed and plush hippos. We started out with the lovable Harpo the Hippo. He’s a soft terry cloth guy.
Then we found the microwaveable wheat and lavender-filled hippos that you can heat up and snuggle with. We got them in four colors: beige, purple, pink, and gray. So far they have been a big hit!
Next, we’ll looking into carrying some handmade hippos by a toymaker in the Netherlands. In the meantime, tell us what you like about stuffies!

Social Tagging: Ivory • Poaching
One thing we don’t sell here at Hippo Mojo is any item made of hippopotamus ivory. Hippopotamus ivory may sound intriguing, but once you understand that ivory is really just hippo teeth, it doesn’t sound so pleasing. What is the problem with using hippo teeth to make cool stuff? Well, the problem is that it is impossible to ascertain whether the ivory was harvested from an animal that died of natural causes or from one that was killed by a poacher. Poachers still pose a considerable threat to the dwindling hippo population and the illegal ivory trade is thriving. See this link for more: http://www.wildlifeextra.com/go/news/ivory-trade656.html. Hippo Mojo understands the appeal of ivory collectibles, but we have decided not to sell them through this site until we can be absolutely assured that the ivory comes from a reputable source.

Social Tagging: Baby Gifts • Gift Items
We are delighted to report that Hippo Mojo went live a few days ago. We are now working to add items to the site. We found some wonderful gift items for babies, including baby slip on shoes, bibs, and burp cloths in a cute pattern of blue hippos on green. We hope to combine baby items into gift baskets at a later date, but for now the items will sell separately. We welcome feedback about the site – if we can fix any problems or awkward sections, we certainly will!

We are busily working on the Hippo Mojo website, your source for fun and funky hippo-related items. It’s quite an undertaking, with an e-commerce section, blog, gallery, and forum, so there is a lot of customizing to be done! We are also busy searching for great hippo products to offer to our customers. So far, we’ve found some amazing leather items and custom made jewelry, along with a smattering of baby gifts.
