Hungry Hungry Hippo iPhone App

If you loved the 1980′s game called Hungry Hungry Hippos, where your hippo tries to gobble up as many marbles as possible, you will love this new iPhone app. If you have an iPhone, that is. If not, I guess you should just stop reading this right now and rush over to the nearest Apple store and get yourself an iPhone. Then you can come back here and finish this post. I’ll wait.

Oh, you’re back. Cool. How do you like your new iPhone? I don’t have one myself but I think they’re awesome. Not so long ago, I couldn’t imagine living without my regular old plain Jane cell phone that I can use to CALL PEOPLE FROM MY CAR! What awesome technology! But now I realize that my formerly cool and totally awesome cell phone is, well, a piece of junk. Now I don’t think I can make it through the day without an iPhone. I MUST HAVE ONE!

And then I must have this new app! It’s called Hungry Hungry Hippos and you can get it at the Apple store here. It’s a digital version of the old favorite but this time the hippos are VERY hungry. The yellow one is “peckish”, the pink one is “craving”, the green one is “famished”, and the orange one “could eat a horse”. Here are two screen shots from the game:

The hippos aren’t as cute as they are in the real game, but this is still a must-have for any hippo lover.

There’s a Hippo on my Back!

I’m not really into tattoos. I don’t have one and I don’t plan on getting one. Why, I don’t know. Probably fear of pain. Also, I have lots of freckles and I feel like I don’t need any more body decor. My skin is already busy enough. But I am fascinated with people who get tattoos. How do they choose a design? Where should it go on the body? Do they ever get sick of it and want it removed? So it was with some interest that I read a recent blog post over at Martlet.ca, an independent weekly student newspaper at the University of Victoria in Canada. Student Will Johnson writes about his hippo tattoo in a post entitled, “Taking the tattoo plunge: an adventure.” Apparently Will is a huge hippo fan and even suspects that he may have been a hippo in a previous life. He identifies with the hippo so much that he had a giant one tattooed on his back. Read his article here.

Some of the most amazing hippo pottery that I have ever seen is created by British expatriate Jennifer Robinson. Jen “The Hippopottermiss”, who lives in the Brittany region of northwestern France, spends her days creating whimsical animal figurines and has a special fondness for hippos. Jen started potting in 1979 after spending her childhood making animals in modelling clay and specializes in hand-modeled animals. Below are some photos of Jen and her work:

Today, Jen’s work won the “Daily Deviation” award on DeviantArt.com. Each day the DeviantArt gallery moderators, who are artists themselves, sift through thousands of submissions to choose works that they think are worth featuring. This is the second time one of Jen’s sculptures has been featured but the first time for a hippo. See the picture, below. Congrats, Jen!

Another Hippo Mascot

Speaking of hippos as mascots, it turns out that George Washington University also claims the hippo as its mascot. Well, unofficial mascot, to be precise. Apparently the university hasn’t declared our tubby friend officially. It seems that something is going on behind the scenes – school administrators are a bit lukewarm toward the hippo and there have been reports that it will be phased out. (See this blog post for more.)
